The Clinic

Rhizome Community Herbal Clinic was established in 2011 and we have now seen hundreds of patients in our clinic. We offer individual herbal consultations with follow up appointments for ongoing care.

Appointments can be in person or online, and we post the herbs.

We aim to provide affordable herbal healthcare in the community, whilst offering the highest standard of treatment, using quality organic herbs.

What is Herbal Medicine?

First Consultation

We’re now offering either online or in-person appointments.

At the first appointment we will take a detailed health history, and ask about your most pressing current concerns. As medical herbalists, we combine traditional knowledge of plants with more recent scientific research to create an individually tailored treatment plan with you. We are trained in being able to recognise when to refer for blood tests or more investigations, often working alongside conventional medicine.

If the appointment is in person, the initial appointment will last around an hour, and each subsequent visit around 40 minutes with medicine dispensed during that time.  If the appointment is online, the initial appointment will be around 45 minutes to an hour, and subsequent ones around 30 minutes, as medicine dispensing happens separately. A review is booked in 3-4 weeks time to assess whether the treatment is starting to help.

How long will the treatment take?

This can vary hugely; it depends on what you are seeking help with and how serious and entrenched the problem is. On average treatment can last around 3-4 months but there are people with chronic health conditions who we can support for years.

Cancellation Policy

We are sure you will understand that we have to operate a cancellation policy for all appointments booked.  If the appointment is not attended on the day, or cancelled with less than 24 hours notice, we ask you to pay for your missed appointment.

Prices

The clinic operates a sliding scale fee structure according to income and assets. If this is implemented effectively, everyone pays a similar percentage of their income or resources for the same services.

We are striving to make herbal medicine accessible to as many people as possible. By supporting this clinic you are enabling many more people to be able to access herbal medicine which we really appreciate.  Initial appointments are charged at slightly more than follow-ups to account for the extra time it takes to take a full case history.

Sliding Scale

We don’t ask for any documentation to prove your income, only that you honestly assess where you are on the sliding scale. We are also trying to support ourselves from the income of our profession. If you are uncomfortable choosing a band we would charge the standard D price, just let us know.

Herb Costs

We aim to keep the weekly costs of the herbs we prescribe as low as possible.  Our herbal medicine tinctures are largely organic and are charged at £7 per 100ml (which usually lasts a week). Dried herbs are £6 for 75g.  We charge a £5 dispensing fee for all refills without an appointment. We do supply a range of supplements and medicinal mushrooms and have passed on our practitioner discount with these.

Why Sliding Scale?

The clinic operates on a sliding scale fee structure according to income.

This is a fee system that is used in clinics worldwide, to ensure equal accessibility to their services, regardless of your income. If a sliding scale is implemented effectively, everyone pays a similar percentage of their income for the same services. Paying according to one’s available resources creates a more equitable system for pricing of products and services.

If your financial situation changes during the course of your treatment with the clinic, always feel free to discuss this with us.

At this time Herbal Medicine is largely confined to private medicine, which makes universal access more of a dream than a reality, but we would like everyone to be able to access herbal medicine if they need to, and our sliding scale structure helps to bring us towards this goal.

Rhizome Clinic receives no public or private funding. We are herbalists who are dedicated to providing our services in as much of a socially and financially inclusive way as we can, whilst still supporting ourselves with an income.

We believe that communities can support each other; fees paid on the continuum of the sliding scale make herbal medicine possible for more people. By supporting this clinic with you are enabling more people to access our services, and to be able to use herbal medicine as part of their long-term healthcare.
